Thenmala Eco Tourism

Thenmala Eco Tourism, the first planned eco tourism destination of India, is located in Punalur in Kollam District of Kerala. It is 160 m above sea level. 

It has been gaining popularity because of its unique vistas, bio-diversity and functioning.  The local meaning of this place is Honey Hill, which was arrived from 'Then' means honey and 'Mala' means hill.  It is said that the honey from this place is of very good quality because of its unique setting. Visiting time for this beautiful place is 10 am to 5 pm.

Thenmala tourism offers equal opportunities for fun, adventure, leisure and for learning the significance and necessity of eco-friendly measures for promoting tourism related activities. For this purpose, this destination has been divided into three zones - Culture Zone, Leisure Zone and Adventure Zone. 

Culture Zone - In this zone, you can indulge in different types of activities like trying different types of Kerala cuisines, memento shopping, visit an amphitheatre, to know about Kerala's Arts and Culture etc. An open air Musical Dancing Fountain which is considered, as "Nature's Dance" is another major attraction here. 

Leisure Zone - Here, you can enjoy trying the boardwalk through the sway bridge leading to the dam, which can be an exciting experience. Another major attraction is the Sculpture Garden, which has Man & Nature as its theme.

Adventure Zone - As the name suggests it is the place for adventure lovers. They can take the elevated walkway for a journey that winds through the canopy of trees and going over rocky terrains. More adventure seekers can even try going for mountain biking, rock climbing and river crossing.

Nakshatravanam where 27 trees associated with 27 birth stars. You can also buy a book on this, to know more about it, which is available there for purchase. 

Butterfly Safaris in an open ambience is another interesting place to visit. 

Palaruvi Waterfalls - just about 16 kms, on the way to Shenkottah.

By Air - The nearest airport is the International Airport at Thiruvananthapuram, which is 72 kms away. 

By Rail - The nearest railway station is Thenmala, which is connected with Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Kashmir. 

By Road - 66 km from Kollam town on the Kollam-Shencotta Road in Pathanapuram taluk, Kollam District.
