My favorite Village - Puthiyedam, Kaladi, Kerala

Puthiyedam is a charming place located in the southern part of Kaladi, Kerala. It is also known as Vellarapally, locally. Vellarapally is surrounded by River Periyar in all three sides, and hence this name.

Puthiyedam is the birth place of Sankthan Thamburan, the erstwhile ruler of Cochin. Among the interesting places for the tourists, the historic Sankthan Thamburan Palace is very famous. Another important place is Puthiyedam Temple where Lord Krishna and Bhagavathi are worshipped with equal importance. Thalapoli festival, held in Malayalam Meenam month, is attended by large number of devotees from nearby areas. Another important festival here is "Mudiyettu".

Above all, this place is also famous for Sri Sankaracharya, founder of Adwaitha, whose birthplace is here.

Sringeri Madam and Adi Sankara Sthupam are the other interesting spots to visit.

The famous Malayattoor Church is very near to Kaladi.

Many rice mills such as Nirapara, Pavizham, Periyar are situated in Kaladi.

Thiruvairanikkulam, a famous temple for Shiva (facing east) and Parvathi (facing west), is also here.

The temple nada for Goddess Parvathi is open only for 12 days a year during the Thiruvathira Festival in Malayalam month Dhanu. It is believed that the unmarried girls would get married soon, if they make a visit to this temple.

Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery) is hardly 5 kms away.

Angamally and Alwaye Railway stations are the nearest railway stations to this beautiful place.
