Silent Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

Silent Valley National Park is located in the Kundali Hills of Palghat District, adjacent to the Attapadi Reserve Forests to the East, the Palghat and Nilambur Forest division in the West and South and the Nilgiri Forests in the North. It is spread over 90 sq. kms, and is extremely fragile and a unique preserve of tropical evergreen rain forests lying above the equator and the forest strip which causes the summer rains in Kerala . It is the only undisturbed tropical evergreen rain forest in India and an area rich in biodiversity. The Park is also known for the rare and unique herbal plants grown here.

Over a 100 species of butterflies and 400 species of moths and other fauna like the Ceylon Frog Moth, Great Indian Hornbill, the Nilgiri Laughing Thrush are seen here.

The animals found here are elephants, tigers, leopards, wild boar, sambhar, gaur and the endangered lion-tailed macaques.

The other interesting areas of attraction nearby are Hill resort of Coonoor, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, the Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary, Attapadi or Mountain Valley, Smrithi Vanam, Palakkad and Coimbatore.

The climate is warm in summer and pleasant in winter.

Reaching There

By Air – The nearest Airport is Coimbatore.

By Rail - The nearest railway station is Olavakkod at Palakkad (75 kms)

By Road: Regular bus services are available from Mannarkad (40 kms away). Bus facility from Palakkad to Mukkali.

Best Season to Visit: September to March.
